FrACTION. The F., or breaking of the eucharistic bread, is performed in different ways in the various liturgies. In the Byzantine liturgy, the priest breaks the bread (also called ‘Lamb’) into four parts, following the cross and initials IC XC NI KA which are stamped into the four quadrants. The four parts are then arranged on the *diskos and the quarter marked IC is placed into the chalice to which the *zeon is then added by the deacon. The West Syrian tradition calls for the breaking of the bread without the separation of the parts before the °institution narrative. The parts are separated before communion and one part is placed in the chalice. In the East Syrian tradition, the F. occurs just before communion: the priest dips a portion of the bread into the chalice and thus proceeds to make the sign of the cross over the remaining parts. In the Coptic liturgy, the priest holds the bread to be broken in his left hand, dips his right index finger into the chalice and signs the bread, which is then divided into five parts and placed on the diskos in the form of a cross. In the Ethiopian liturgy the bread is broken into thirteen parts and arranged on the diskos in the form of the cross.
