Bishop of Leiria-Fátima
José Ornelas Carvalho, S.C.I., was born on January 5, 1954, in Porto da Cruz (Madeira), in the Diocese of Funchal. After attending the diocesan seminary in Funchal (1964–1967), he entered the *Sagrado Coração* Missionary College in Funchal, which was run by Dehonian priests (1967–1969). He then completed his secondary education at the *Sagrado Coração* Missionary Institute in Coimbra (1969–1971). He undertook his novitiate in Aveiro, making his temporary vows in the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Dehonians) on September 29, 1972. He made his perpetual religious profession on September 23, 1977. His formation included: a philosophy course at ISET (*Instituto Superior de Estudos Teológicos*) in Lisbon (1972–1974); a pastoral internship in the Diocese of Gurué, Mozambique (1974–1976); and a theology course at the Faculty of Theology of the Catholic University of Portugal in Lisbon (1976–1979), where he also obtained a Baccalaureate degree. Furthermore, he attended the Biblical Institute in Rome, where he earned first a Licentiate and later a Doctorate in Biblical Theology. Ordained a priest on August 9, 1981, he subsequently held the following positions: Vice-Rector of the *Nossa Senhora de Fátima* Seminary in Alfragide; Professor of Sacred Scripture at the Faculty of Theology of the Catholic University of Portugal; Secretary of the Faculty in Lisbon (1983–1991); Provincial Councilor (1985–1988); Prefect of Studies at the *Nossa Senhora de Fátima* Seminary; Vice-Provincial (1997–2000); Provincial Superior (2000–2003); and Superior General (2003–2015).
