Bishop of Valença
Nelson Francelino Ferreira was born on February 26, 1965, in Sapé, in the Archdiocese of Paraíba. After completing his intermediate studies at the Archdiocesan Seminary of Rio de Janeiro (1983–1985), he studied Philosophy at the "João Paulo II" Ecclesiastical Faculty of Philosophy in Rio de Janeiro (1983–1985) and Theology at the Higher Institute of Theology (1986–1994). He subsequently obtained a Licentiate and a degree in Pastoral Theology from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (1994–2000). He was ordained a priest on August 4, 1990, and incardinated into the Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, where he held the following positions: Parochial Vicar of the "São Luiz, Rei de França" parish in Costa Barros (1990); Parochial Vicar of the "Sagrada Família" parish in Realengo (1990); Parish Priest of the "São Marcos" parish in Barra da Tijuca (1999–2005); and Parish Priest of the "Nossa Senhora da Glória" parish in Laranjeiras, in the city of Rio de Janeiro (2005–2010). On November 24, 2010, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro and Titular Bishop of Alava, receiving episcopal ordination on February 5, 2011.
