Archbishop of Wrocław
Józef Piotr Kupny was born on February 23, 1956, in Dąbrówka Wielka, in the Diocese of Katowice. After completing his secondary education, he entered the Major Seminary of Katowice in 1975 and was ordained a priest on March 31, 1983, incardinated in the Diocese of Katowice. From 1983 to 1986, he served as a parochial vicar in Katowice. Encouraged to pursue further studies, he obtained a Licentiate in Theology from the Academy of Theology in Warsaw in 1986, followed by a Master’s degree (1990) and a Doctorate (1993) in Social Sciences from the Catholic University of Lublin (KUL), with a thesis titled "Anthropological Foundations of the Social Teaching of John Paul II," published in 1994. He served as an assistant (1992–2001) and subsequently as an adjunct professor (from 1994) at KUL; in 1993, he began teaching at the Major Seminary of the Archdiocese of Katowice, becoming its Rector in 2001—a position he currently holds.
