Archbishop of Ayacucho o Huamanga
He was born in Lima on January 27, 1949, the son of Salvador Piñeiro Nesanovich and Carmen García Calderón de Piñeiro. He completed his schooling at the "La Salle" school. He pursued his studies in philosophy and theology at the Pontifical and Civil Faculty of Theology of Lima, obtaining a degree in Education and a Licentiate in Theology. He entered the Santo Toribio Major Seminary in 1965. He was ordained a priest on May 6, 1973, by Cardinal Juan Landázuri Ricketts. During his pastoral ministry, he held the following positions: parochial vicar; professor of philosophy and theology at the Faculty of Theology; professor at the School of Catechesis; pastor of Nuestra Señora del Carmen in San Miguel; pastor of Santísima Cruz in Barranco; rector of the Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo Major Seminary; vicar for pastoral care; vicar general of the Archdiocese of Lima; and pastor of Santa Rosa de Lima in Lince. He was appointed bishop by Pope John Paul II. Furthermore, he was ordained and took canonical possession of the Military Ordinariate of Peru at the Lima Cathedral on September 2, 2001. Later, on July 8, 2003, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Lurín to assist Monsignor José Ramón Gurruchaga. On August 8, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him the new Metropolitan Archbishop of Ayacucho. On October 2 of that year, he took office as Archbishop of Ayacucho during a Holy Mass celebrated at the Ayacucho Cathedral. Additionally, he served as President of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference for the 2012–2018 terms. On June 29, 2012—the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul—he received the archiepiscopal pallium from the Holy Father, Benedict XVI.
