Bishop Edgar Aristizábal Quintero

Edgar Aristizábal Quintero is Bishop of Duitama-Sogamoso, Colombia. Bishop Edgar Aristizábal Quintero was born in Cartago, Valle, Diocese of Cartago, on 2 December 1965, in the family of Luis Arturo Aristizábal Ramírez and Olga Quintero Bedoya. After primary studies, he completed secondary studies at the minor seminary of Cartago. He studied philosophy at San Pedro Apóstol Major Seminary in Cali and at Nuestra Señora de la Anunciación Major Seminary in Cartago, and theology at Nuestra Señora del Rosario Major Seminary in Manizales and at the major seminary of Cartago. After priestly ordination, he studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, obtaining a licentiate in biblical theology. On 7 December 1990 he received priestly ordination from Bishop José Gabriel Calderón, then Bishop of Cartago. He served as parish priest of San Gabriel Arcángel in Cartago in 1990; parish priest of San Joaquín and Santa Ana in Cartago in 1992-1993; rector of the Ecce Homo Shrine in Ricaurte in 1994-1996; professor and rector of the minor seminary and professor at the major seminary of Cartago in 1991-1996; rector of the major seminary of Cartago in 1999-2009; and director of the Department of Doctrine and Ecumenism of the Permanent Secretariat of the Colombian Episcopate in 2009-2011. He was ecclesiastical adviser of Cursillos de Cristiandad and a member of the Presbyteral Council, Pastoral Council, and College of Consultors of the Diocese of Cartago. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him auxiliary bishop of Medellín on 4 May 2011, and on 4 June of the same year he received episcopal ordination in the Cathedral of Medellín from Archbishop Ricardo Antonio Tobón Restrepo of Medellín. On 4 May 2017 Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Yopal, and he took canonical possession of that ecclesiastical jurisdiction on 17 June 2017. On 24 May 2024 Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of the Diocese of Duitama-Sogamoso, and he took possession of the see on 19 July 2024.
