Bishop Christian Würtz

Dr. Dr. Christian Wuertz was born in 1971 in Karlsruhe and grew up there. After his Abitur and civilian service, he first studied law from 1991 to 1996 and worked for two years as a legal trainee. In 2002 he received a doctorate as Dr. iur. utr. From 1998 to 2004 he also studied theology in Freiburg and Wuerzburg. On 14 May 2006 he was ordained a priest in Freiburg and afterward was vicar in Gammertingen. In 2008 Wuertz returned to the University of Freiburg as a research assistant in the area of Middle and Modern Church History/History of Piety and Regional Church History, and in 2011 he received a doctorate as Dr. theol. In 2010 he was appointed parish administrator, and in 2011 pastor of the Vorderes Kinzigtal pastoral care unit. In 2013 Christian Wuertz additionally took on the role of diocesan judge at the Archiepiscopal Officialate of Freiburg. In May 2018 Dr. Dr. Wuertz was appointed city dean of the Freiburg deanery; in September 2018 he began his service as cathedral pastor at Freiburg Minster. On 13 July 2018 Archbishop Stephan Burger also appointed the new cathedral pastor as a resident cathedral chapter member at the Metropolitan Church of Freiburg im Breisgau. On 26 April 2019 Pope Francis appointed Dr. Dr. Christian Wuertz titular bishop of Germania in Dacia and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Freiburg, and on 30 June 2019 Archbishop Stephan Burger ordained him a bishop. From October 2019 he is responsible as regens for the priestly formation of the archdiocese. He is also episcopal vicar for universities. In the associated operational tasks, the Main Department of Education supports the episcopal vicar.
