Archbishop Gian Carlo Perego

The Pope has appointed Msgr. Giancarlo Perego—a priest of the Diocese of Cremona and formerly Director General of the "Migrantes" Foundation—as Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Ferrara-Comacchio. Msgr. Perego was born in Vailate (Cremona) on November 25, 1960. He completed his studies at the Diocesan Seminary of Cremona, subsequently obtaining a Licentiate in Systematic Theology from the Theological Faculty of Northern Italy; in 1996, he earned a doctorate in Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University. He was ordained a priest on June 23, 1984, and is incardinated in the Diocese of Cremona. Msgr. Perego served as parochial vicar of San Giuseppe al Cambonino from 1984 to 1992; private secretary to Msgr. Giulio Nicolini from 1993 to 1994; Director of the Diocesan Caritas from 1997 to 2002; Deputy Director of the National Caritas and head of the Study Center and Historical Archive from 2002 to 2009; and has served as Director General of the "Migrantes" Foundation since 2009. Additionally, he was private secretary to Msgr. Enrico Assi from 1984 to 1992; a teacher at the Diocesan Seminary of Cremona from 1996 to 2002; a lecturer at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart (Cremona campus) from 1996 to 2002; diocesan assistant for MEIC from 1997 to 2003; and spiritual assistant for FUCI from 1997 to 2002. Since 2009, he has taught Dogmatic Theology at LUMSA, and from 2012 to 2016, he served as a Consultor to the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People. He has been a Chaplain of His Holiness since April 30, 2009. He published his thesis: “A Wholly Spiritual Ministry: The Theology of Ordained Ministry in Lombard Jansenism between the Enlightenment and Liberalism (1755–1955).” He is the editor of the magazine *Migrantes* and has published various articles and other writings.
