Bishop of Garissa
George Muthaka was born on December 28, 1974, in Ruiru, Kiambu County, within the Archdiocese of Nairobi. He pursued his studies in philosophy in Zambia at St. Bonaventure University College in Lusaka (1996–1999) and in theology at Tangaza University College in Nairobi (1999–2003). He made his perpetual vows in the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin on August 31, 2002, and was ordained a priest on June 28, 2003. Between 2015 and 2017, he earned a Master’s degree in Church Management from Villanova University (USA) and a Master’s degree in Psychology from Divine Mercy University (USA). He has held the following positions: Parochial Vicar of Msabaha Parish in the Diocese of Malindi (2003–2007), while simultaneously serving as Coordinator of the Diocesan Justice and Peace Office and Director of Caritas; Guardian of St. Bridget Friary in Nairobi and Director of the associated pastoral complex (2007–2009); and Vice Provincial Minister for two consecutive terms (2009–2015). Since 2017, he has served in the Diocese of Garissa as Vicar General, Cathedral Parish Priest, Diocesan Financial Administrator, Director of Caritas, and Chairperson of the Diocesan Commission for the Protection of Minors.
