Earl Alfred Boyea Jr. is Bishop of Lansing, Michigan, USA. Earl A. Boyea was born on 10 April 1951 in Pontiac, Michigan, in the Archdiocese of Detroit. After attending Our Lady of the Lakes parish elementary school in Waterford, he went to Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit for secondary studies from 1965 to 1969 and for philosophy and history from 1969 to 1973. He was then sent to Rome to the Pontifical North American College, where he completed theological studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University, obtaining the baccalaureate in theology from 1973 to 1976 and the licentiate in biblical theology in 1980. He later completed courses for the Master of Arts in history at Wayne State University in Detroit in 1984 and, in 1987, graduated in the same discipline at The Catholic University in Washington, D.C. He was ordained a priest on 20 May 1978 for the Archdiocese of Detroit. After ordination, he was assigned from 1978 to 1979 as vice-parish priest at Saint Michael Parish in Monroe, and from 1980 to 1984 at Saint Timothy Parish in Trenton. He was also temporary administrator of Saint Christine Parish in Detroit in 1986. From 1987 to 2000 he was a member of the faculty of Sacred Heart Seminary, with the role of dean of studies from 1990 to 2000. From 1990 to 1991 he was a member of the Archdiocesan Presbyteral Council of Detroit and, from 1994 to 2000, also a member of the committee for the academy of Madonna University. From 1989 he served as chaplain at a diocesan summer camp for boys, Camp Santa Maria in Gaylord, Michigan. From 2000 to 2002 he was rector-president of the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio. Appointed titular bishop of Siccenna and auxiliary bishop of Detroit on 22 July 2002, he received episcopal consecration on 13 September 2002. Within the episcopal conference he was a member of the Committee for the Boundaries of Dioceses and Provinces of Region VI, the Committee for Priestly Formation, and the Committee for the Selection of Bishops of Region VI.
