Archbishop of La Plata
Gustavo Oscar Carrara is Archbishop of La Plata, Argentina. He was born in Buenos Aires on 24 May 1973. He entered the Immaculate Conception metropolitan seminary of the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires in 1991. He completed ecclesiastical studies in the Faculty of Theology of the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina Santa María de los Buenos Aires (UCA). He was ordained priest on 24 October 1998 by the laying on of hands of the then Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Monsignor Jorge Mario Bergoglio, S.J. After priestly ordination he fulfilled the following ministries and offices: from 1999 to 2003, parish vicar of Nuestra Señora de Luján de los Patriotas, Mataderos neighborhood; from 2003 to 2006, parish vicar of the San Cayetano shrine, Liniers neighborhood; from 2006 to 2007, parish vicar of Inmaculada Concepción, Belgrano; from 2007 to 2009, first parish administrator and then pastor of Virgen Inmaculada, Villa Soldati neighborhood; and from 2009 to 2017, pastor of Santa María, Madre del Pueblo, in the emergency settlement 1-11-14 of Bajo Flores. In 2002 he was responsible in the archdiocesan commission for youth ministry; from 2006 to 2009, vice-adviser of the archdiocesan council of the youth area of Argentine Catholic Action; from 2007 to 2011, responsible for pastoral care in the emergency settlements; from 2012 to 2017, episcopal vicar for the emergency settlements; from 2011, member of the presbyteral council; and from 2012 to 2014, dean of Deanery 20 Soldati. On 20 November 2017 Pope Francis appointed him titular Bishop of Tasbalta and auxiliary of Buenos Aires. He received episcopal ordination in the Cathedral of Buenos Aires on 16 December 2017 from the then Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Cardinal Mario Aurelio Poli. The co-consecrators were Bishop Oscar Vicente Ojea, Bishop of San Isidro; Archbishop Víctor Manuel Fernández, at that time rector archbishop of the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina; Bishop Joaquín Mariano Sucunza; and Bishop Ernesto Giobando, S.J., auxiliary bishops of Buenos Aires. At the time of the source he was vicar general, episcopal vicar for the Pastoral Care of Villas, and episcopal vicar of education of the Buenos Aires archdiocese. In the Argentine Episcopal Conference he was recently named president of the Episcopal Commission of Cáritas Argentina.
