Archbishop Saverio Antonio Gennaro Cannistrà

Archbishop Saverio Antonio Gennaro Cannistrà, O.C.D., Archbishop of Pisa, Italy, was appointed Metropolitan Archbishop of Pisa by the Holy Father after the resignation from the pastoral governance of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Pisa presented by Archbishop Giovanni Paolo Benotto. Father Saverio Cannistrà, O.C.D., had been superior general of the Discalced Carmelites and until then parish vicar of San Pancrazio in Rome. Archbishop Cannistrà was born in Catanzaro on 3 October 1958. After a degree in Romance philology at the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa, he had work experience as an editor at a publishing house. On 17 September 1985 he entered the novitiate of the Italian Province of Tuscany of the Order of Discalced Carmelites and made perpetual profession on 14 September 1990. On 24 October 1992 he was ordained priest. He held the following offices and undertook further studies: doctorate in dogmatic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome (1998); lecturer in Trinitarian theology at the Pontifical Theological Faculty and Institute of Spirituality Teresianum in Rome (1995-2003); professor of Christology and theological anthropology at the Theological Faculty of Central Italy in Florence (2003-2009). In 2007 he was elected a member of the presidency council of the Italian Theological Association. In the Tuscan Province of the Discalced Carmelites he was provincial councillor (1996-2002), master of postulants and students (1999-2008), and provincial from 2008. He was also superior general of the Order of Discalced Carmelites (2009-2021). He is a member of the presbyteral council of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Florence and, at the source date, was parish vicar in the Church of San Pancrazio in Rome.
