ThLic. Tomáš Holub, Th.D., was born on 16 August 1967 in Jaroměř. He comes from the parish in Červený Kostelec, in the Diocese of Hradec Králové. He received priestly ordination on 28 August 1993 in Hradec Králové from Archbishop Karel Otčenášek. His academic preparation includes studies of philosophy and theology at the Cyril and Methodius Theological Faculty in Litoměřice in 1985-1989, theology studies at the Catholic Theological Faculty in Salzburg, Austria, in 1990-1991, master's studies in theology at the Catholic Theological Faculty of Charles University in Prague in 1993, further studies at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome in 2007-2008 and at Hamburg's Institut für Theologie und Frieden, with study stays in 2005-2008, and a doctorate in moral theology at the Catholic Theological Faculty of Charles University in Prague, where he defended his dissertation in Christian ethics on the topic Ethical Aspects of the Fight against Terrorism in the Light of the Teaching on the So-called Just War. He carried out these services and held the following offices: chaplain in the parish in Kutná Hora, in the Diocese of Hradec Králové, and spiritual director at the Church Gymnasium of Saint Ursula there in 1993-1996; first military chaplain and later chief chaplain of the Army of the Czech Republic in 1996-2006; moderator of the curia in 2008 and vicar general of the Diocese of Hradec Králové in 2008-2010; in 2011-2016 he was general secretary of the Czech Bishops' Conference; in 2011-2016 he was elected dean of the Collegiate Chapter in Prague at Vyšehrad. Since 2006 he has served as adviser to the minister of defence for spiritual service. The Holy Father John Paul II appointed him Chaplain of His Holiness on 14. 7. 2003. On 12. 2. 2016 he was appointed bishop of the Diocese of Plzeň by the Holy Father Francis. On 30 April 2016 he was ordained bishop of the Diocese of Plzeň by Archbishop Dominik Duka of Prague. The co-consecrators were František Radkovský, bishop emeritus of Plzeň, and Rudolf Voderholzer, bishop of Regensburg. He took office as the second bishop of Plzeň. As his episcopal motto he chose the text: "Whoever loves knows God" (cf. 1 John 4:7). He is chairman of the Economic Council of the Czech Bishops' Conference, chairman of the Economic-Legal Commission of the Czech Bishops' Conference, chairman of the Commission for Catholic Education of the Czech Bishops' Conference, and delegate of the Council for Ecumenism and Interreligious Dialogue.
