Archbishop of Pouso Alegre
José Luiz Majella Delgado, C.Ss.R., was born on October 19, 1953, in Juiz de Fora (Minas Gerais). He completed his basic studies at Redemptorist schools in Aparecida, his philosophical studies in Lorena, and his theological studies at the Theological Institute of São Paulo. After making his religious profession in the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Province of São Paulo) on July 31, 1980, he was ordained a priest on March 14, 1981. He subsequently held various positions: Parochial Vicar at the National Basilica of Our Lady of the Conception Aparecida; at the Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in the Diocese of São João da Boa Vista; at the Holy Trinity Parish in Tietê; at the Parish of Our Lady of the Patronage of the Blessed Sacrament in Minas Gerais; and at Saint Alphonsus Parish in Tijuca. He served as Superior and Rector of the Redemptorist Seminary in Minas Gerais; Superior of his community at the Saint Thérèse Seminary in Tietê, São Paulo; Rector of the Seminary of Our Lady of the Patronage of the Blessed Sacrament in Sacramento; Superior of the Alfonsianum Community (juniorate) in São Paulo; Rector of the Saint Alphonsus Redemptorist Seminary in Aparecida; and Assistant Novice Master and Novice Master in Tietê, São Paulo. He was a member of the Provincial Council of the Redemptorist Province of São Paulo; the Interprovincial Secretariat for Redemptorist Spirituality; the Provincial Secretariat for Redemptorist Formation in São Paulo; and the Coordination of Redemptorist Novice Masters of the Southern Cone of Latin America. He served as Secretary of the Organization of Seminaries and Institutes of Brazil (OSIB) for the "East 2" Region of the Bishops' Conference of Brazil, and of the Association of Liturgists of Brazil (ASLI). He was a member of the Coordination of Religious for the Itapetininga Hub (São Paulo Region) and of the Reflection Group on Formation for the Conference of Religious of Brazil (São Paulo Region). He also served as Executive Advisor to the National Conference of Religious of Brazil. Professor of Liturgical Theology at the *Instituto de Teologia Moral* in São Paulo and the *Instituto Educacional Seminário Paulopolitano*; of Liturgical Theology at the *Instituto São Paulo de Estudos Superiores* in São Paulo; and of Liturgical Theology at the Pontifical Faculty of Theology of *Nossa Senhora da Assunção* in São Paulo. Since 2007, he has served as Deputy Undersecretary of the Bishops' Conference of Brazil (*Conferência Nacional dos Bispos do Brasil*, CNBB).
