Bishop of Port-Vila
Bishop Jean (John) Bosco Baremes, S.M., Bishop of Port-Vila, Vanuatu, Pacific Oceania, was born on 30 August 1960 in Han, Carteret Island, in the Province of North Solomon, Papua New Guinea. After primary studies on his island of origin and secondary studies at Saint Joseph College in Rigu, he entered the minor seminary of Rabaul. He then decided to become a Marist Father and entered the institute's novitiate in Taveuni, Fiji. He made perpetual profession on 18 January 1981. He subsequently studied philosophy at Bomana Seminary in Port Moresby and theology in the same seminary before moving to the Pacific Regional Seminary to complete ecclesiastical studies there. He was ordained a priest on 4 December 1987 on Carteret Island. After priestly ordination he held the following offices: from 1988 to 1997, pastor in Pouébo, New Caledonia; from 1998 to 1999, studies in Pastoral Counselling at Loyola College, Baltimore, Maryland, USA; from 2000 to 2002, director of the Bougainville Trauma Counselling Institute; from 2003 to 2008, councilor of the Oceania Province of the Marist Fathers, Fiji; and in 2009, a sabbatical year.
