Bishop of San Angelo
Michael J. Sis was born on January 9, 1960, in Mount Holly, New Jersey, in the Diocese of Trenton. He attended the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy (1982). He pursued theological studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Pontifical North American College in Rome (1982–1986). Subsequently, he obtained a Licentiate in Moral Theology from the Alphonsian Academy in Rome (1990). He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Austin on July 19, 1986. Following his ordination, he held the following positions: Parochial Vicar at Cristo Rey Parish (1986–1988) and at St. Mary’s Cathedral (1990–1992) in Austin; Assistant Chaplain (1989 and 1992–1993) and later University Chaplain (1993–2006) at the St. Mary’s Center at Texas A&M University in College Station; Director of Vocations (2006–2009); and Pastor of St. Thomas More Parish in Austin (2009–2010). Since 2010, he has served as Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia. In 2009, he was named a Chaplain to His Holiness. In addition to English, he speaks Spanish and Italian.
