Teodoro Mendes Tavares, C.S.Sp., was born on January 7, 1964, in Cape Verde. After professing his vows in the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (Spiritans), he pursued studies in philosophy at the Higher Institute of Theology in Braga and in theology at the Catholic University of Portugal in Lisbon. Subsequently, he obtained a Licentiate in Ecumenism from Trinity College Dublin. He was ordained a priest on July 11, 1993. On February 16, 2011, he was appointed Titular Bishop of Verbe and Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Belém do Pará (Brazil), receiving episcopal ordination on the following May 8. Later, on June 10, 2015, he was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Ponta de Pedras (Brazil), succeeding to the see on September 23, 2015.
