Bishop Rodrigo Aguilar Martínez

Bishop Rodrigo Aguilar Martínez, Bishop of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, was born on March 13, 1952, at Valle de Santiago, in the Diocese of Irapuato. He made his ecclesiastical studies at the seminary of the Archdiocese of Morelia, and he was ordained a priest on July 25, 1975, being incardinated in Morelia. He afterwards obtained a licentiate in the sciences of education at the Pontifical Salesian University in Rome. During his priestly ministry he was secretary to the Archbishop of Morelia, a formator in the seminary, secretary of the presbyteral council, rector of the shrine of St. Joseph, spiritual director of the students of philosophy and an assistant of the Encuentros Matrimoniales movement. On May 28, 1997, he was appointed the first Bishop of Matehuala. He received episcopal ordination on July 31, 1997, at Matehuala, with Justo Mullor García as principal consecrator and Alberto Suárez Inda and Arturo Antonio Szymanski Ramírez as co-consecrators. On January 28, 2006, he was appointed Bishop of Tehuacán. On November 3, 2017, he was appointed Bishop of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, and he was installed on January 1, 2018. He served as Apostolic Administrator of Tuxtla Gutiérrez from November 27, 2023, until April 25, 2025.
