Bishop Hugo Nicolás Barbaro

Bishop Hugo Nicolás Barbaro, Bishop of San Roque de Presidencia Roque Sáenz Peña, was born on December 12, 1950, in Vicente López, Buenos Aires. Having obtained a doctorate in medicine from the University of Buenos Aires in 1974 and practised for two years, he entered the international seminary of the Prelature of Opus Dei in Rome and took a degree in moral theology in 1980. He was ordained a priest on August 15, 1980, at Torreciudad, Spain, and was incardinated in the Prelature of Opus Dei. He then collaborated with the Prelate in Rome before returning to Argentina, where he exercised various priestly ministries in Buenos Aires and Mendoza. He was chaplain of the Las Barracas cultural centre in San Isidro and chaplain of the Carrizal university residence in Mendoza (1982-1989). From 1990 to 1991 he was secretary of the delegation of the Prelature in Bolivia, where from 1991 to 1994 he served as regional vicar. From 1994 he served as regional spiritual director of Opus Dei for Argentina and was a member of the council of the regional vicar. On April 22, 2008, he was appointed Bishop of San Roque de Presidencia Roque Sáenz Peña. He received episcopal ordination on July 4, 2008, and was installed on July 26, 2008.
