Bishop of Teramo-Atri
The Holy Father has appointed Msgr. Lorenzo Leuzzi as Bishop of Teramo-Atri, transferring him from the titular see of Cittanova and the office of Auxiliary Bishop of Rome. Msgr. Lorenzo Leuzzi was born in Trani (in the province of Bari and the archdiocese of Trani-Barletta-Bisceglie) on September 25, 1955. After completing his classical high school studies, he entered the seminary; as a student at the Theological Institute of Bari, he obtained a Baccalaureate in Theology (1979) and subsequently completed his priestly formation at the Pontifical Roman Major Seminary. He earned a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Bari (1980), specializing in Forensic and Insurance Medicine at the Catholic University in Rome (1983). He obtained a Licentiate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Lateran University (1983) and a Doctorate in Moral Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University (1985). He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Rome on June 2, 1984, by Cardinal Ugo Poletti in the Cathedral of Trani. He has held the following positions: Ecclesiastical Assistant at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome; person in charge of University Pastoral Care for the Diocese of Rome; Director of the Marian Congregation of Mary Immaculate and of the San Filippo Neri School of Religion (Esquilino); Rector of the Church of San Filippo Neri (Esquilino); Director of the Office for University Pastoral Care of the Vicariate of Rome; member of the Commission for Catholic Education, Schools, and Universities of the Lazio Episcopal Conference; and Rector of the Church of San Gregorio Nazianzeno at Montecitorio and Chaplain to the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament. He has been a Chaplain of His Holiness since 1993. Appointed Titular Bishop of Cittanova and Auxiliary Bishop of Rome on January 31, 2012, he received episcopal consecration on April 14 of that year. As Auxiliary Bishop of Rome, he serves as Delegate for University Pastoral Care and Culture and as Chaplain to the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Republic. Within the Italian Episcopal Conference, he is a member of the Episcopal Commission for Catholic Education, Schools, and Universities, as well as a member of the Supervisory Board of the Vatican Publishing House. Msgr. Leuzzi is the author of numerous publications of a cultural and theological-pastoral nature.
