Diocese of Tezpur

Michael Akasius Toppo was born on May 8, 1955, in Gormara, in the Diocese of Tezpur. From 1964 to 1969, he attended Don Bosco School in Dhekiajuli; from 1970 to 1977, he attended St. Paul’s Apostolic School in Shillong, followed by Christ King College in Shillong for his philosophy studies. He obtained a B.A. from St. Antony’s College, Shillong. After completing a two-year internship at Muktidata Minor Seminary in Tezpur, he finished his theological studies at St. Albert’s College in Ranchi. He was ordained a priest on January 26, 1986, in Dhekiajuli, and incardinated into the Diocese of Tezpur. Following his ordination, he held the following positions: Prefect of Studies at Muktidata Minor Seminary (1986–1988); Parochial Vicar in Soraibil (1988–1989); Parochial Vicar at Tezpur Cathedral (1989–1993); Parish Priest of Tezpur Cathedral (1993–1996); and Rector of Muktidata Minor Seminary (1996–2005). Since 2005, he has served as Diocesan Bursar, Diocesan Chancellor, Diocesan Consultor, and a member of the Presbyteral Council.
