Bishop of Tortosa
Sergi Gordo Rodríguez was born in Barcelona on March 23, 1967. At the age of 14, he entered the minor seminary. He later moved to the major seminary, where he pursued ecclesiastical studies in Philosophy and Theology. He obtained a Bachelor's degree in Theology from the Faculty of Theology of Catalonia. He was ordained a priest on June 14, 1992. He holds a degree in Philosophy from Ramon Llull University in Barcelona (1994), where he also completed the two-year doctoral program in Philosophy. From 2001 to 2004, he pursued further studies in Language and Philosophy in Munich. He has carried out his priestly ministry in the Diocese of Barcelona, holding the following positions: priest attached to the churches of Santa María and the Santísima Trinidad in Villafranca del Penedès and formator at the diocesan minor seminary (1992–2001); collaborator with the episcopal delegation for Consecrated Life, responsible for relations with Secular Institutes (1997–2005); and professor at the Ecclesiastical Faculty of Philosophy and the propaedeutic course of the conciliar seminary (1998–2017). Sergi Gordo served as Chancellor of the Curia and Secretary General of the Archdiocese of Barcelona, as well as Secretary of the Ecclesiastical Province of Barcelona (2004–2017); he was a canon and a member of the Presbyteral Council, the College of Consultors, and the Diocesan Pastoral Council (2009–2017); diocesan chaplain for the Movement of Catholic Professionals of Barcelona (2011–2017); and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for the Construction of the Basilica of the Sagrada Família (2017). On June 19, 2017, Pope Francis appointed Sergi Gordo as Auxiliary Bishop of Barcelona. He received episcopal ordination on September 9 of that same year. On July 13, 2023, his appointment as Bishop of Tortosa was announced; he took possession of the see on September 9 of that same year. Since April 2021, he has served as secretary and spokesperson for the Tarraconense Episcopal Conference, succeeding Msgr. Joan Enric Vives Sicilia, Archbishop of Urgell.
