Steven Joseph Lopes was born on April 22, 1975, in Fremont, California. He pursued his philosophical studies at the University of San Francisco and the Leopold-Franzens University of Innsbruck. After entering the seminary of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, he studied theology at St. Patrick's Seminary in Menlo Park, California, and in Rome as a student at the Pontifical North American College. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of San Francisco on June 23, 2001. After serving in various pastoral roles, he obtained a Doctorate in Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University. Since September 1, 2005, he has served as an official of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. He has also taught theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University. Since 2012, he has served as Secretary of the Interdicasterial Commission *Anglicanae Traditiones*. In 2010, he was named a Chaplain to His Holiness. In addition to English, he speaks Italian and German.
