Archbishop Luis Javier Argüello García

Luis Javier Argüello García is the Archbishop of Valladolid, Spain. He was born on 16 May 1953 in Meneses de Campos (Palencia). He studied in Valladolid, at the school of the Brothers of La Salle and then at the University, where he obtained a licentiate in Civil Law. He completed ecclesiastical studies at the center of the Augustinian Fathers in Valladolid. He was ordained a priest on 27 September 1986 for the Archdiocese of Valladolid, where he held the following posts: formator in the diocesan seminary of Valladolid (1986-1997); episcopal vicar of the city and member of the episcopal council during three periods (1986-1997, 2003-2009 and 2010-2011). He was also delegate for vocational pastoral ministry (1997-2012); moderator of the chaplaincy of the Monastery of the "Concepción del Carmen" (1997-2011); rector of the diocesan seminary (1997-2011); and elected member of the Permanent Commission of the Presbyteral Council (2003-2008). Until his episcopal appointment, he was vicar general and moderator of the diocesan Curia from 2011; member of the college of consultors from 2000; member of the Permanent Commission of the Presbyteral Council from 2010; member of the Council for Economic Affairs and of the Episcopal Council from 2011; member of the Permanent Commission of the Pastoral Council from 2013; and member of the Commission for the Permanent Diaconate from 2014. On 14 April 2016 Pope Francis appointed him auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Valladolid. He received episcopal consecration on 3 June of the same year. On Friday, 17 June 2022, the Pope appointed him Archbishop of Valladolid. On 30 July he took possession as the new archbishop of the diocese.
