EWTN to air film on St. Peter Claver, slave of the slaves
EWTN is airing a film about St. Peter Claver, the Jesuit missionary who served enslaved Africans in Cartagena, Colombia, for more than forty years. He met arriving slave ships with food, medicine, and pastoral care, defended the enslaved, and instructed nearly 300,000 people in the Catholic faith.
His self-description, Aethiopum semper servus—“always the slave of the Africans”—inspired the title “slave of the slaves.” Pope Leo XIII held up Claver as a model of apostolic charity in the struggle for the liberty and dignity of enslaved people.
