Pope Leo XIV: Marital love is tireless and faithful ‘Yes’ for a lifetime
Pope Leo XIV writes the foreword to a new edition of “YOUCAT: Love Forever,” which helps young people reflect on love, relationships, and marriage through the Catholic faith. He describes lasting love as a lifelong commitment shaped by self-giving, trust, forgiveness, and faithfulness, rather than a passing emotion or pursuit of personal gain. The Pope presents marriage as a reflection of Christ’s love for the Church and encourages young people not to fear the depth of the love to which they are called. The book includes testimonies from young people in more than 30 countries and presents marriage as a lifelong “yes” rooted in God’s faithful love.

Pope Leo XIV’s foreword to a new edition of YOUCAT: Love Forever presents love as a lifelong vocation rooted in faith, self-giving and commitment. Addressing young people, he distinguishes enduring love from passing emotion and describes marriage as a reflection of Christ’s love for the Church. 1 2
Leo says the longing for deep, self-sacrificing and lasting love reflects the human vocation to love. He acknowledges that attraction can arise intensely and quickly, but says authentic love must grow into a decision, a journey and a lifelong covenant. 1 2
He describes mutual trust and a commitment to “forever” as foundations of lasting relationships. In his account, love asks how one can love as Christ did before asking what one might gain from a relationship. 2
The Pope writes that when a man and a woman give themselves wholly to one another, God is present in their relationship. He presents marital fidelity, forgiveness and daily efforts to do good as reflections of Christ’s love for the Church, while noting that love is imperfect and grows through faith. 1
Leo points to Jesus’ crucifixion as the clearest image of true love, connecting Christ’s willingness to die for others with the Christian command to love one another. He encourages young people not to fear the depth of this vocation, saying such love can withstand difficulties and sustain them throughout life. 1
The new edition is intended to help young people reflect on love, relationships and marriage in the light of Catholic teaching. It includes testimonies from young people in more than 30 countries; OSV reports that the book also serves engaged and newly married couples, pastoral workers, mentors and catechists. 2
OSV reports that the first edition appeared in May 2025 and that the new edition retains Pope Francis’ words in an epilogue. Aleteia says the new edition was due for release in November. 1 2*
Christian marriage as a covenant of self-giving love and lifelong fidelity
Christian marriage is a covenant of mutual self-giving: a man and a woman freely commit themselves to one another in an enduring union, promising fidelity “in good times and in bad.” It is not merely a passing feeling or an agreement maintained only while circumstances are easy; it is a responsible decision to give oneself to the other for life.
For Christians, this covenant is also a sacrament. The spouses’ love is meant to reflect Christ’s faithful love for the Church. God’s grace sustains them, helping their love deepen through ordinary joys and hardships alike.
Self-giving does not mean that spouses lose their dignity or that love requires accepting abuse. It means seeking one another’s good through mutual respect, support, forgiveness, and sometimes self-denial. This gift is lived out over time, and in God’s plan the love of husband and wife is open to new life and family.
