The Church recognizes martyrdom as witness to holiness
Yes. The Church sees martyrdom as a supreme witness to Christ and to the truth of the faith—even unto death. In honoring martyrs, she recognizes their witness as a sign of her own holiness and gives glory to Christ, whose grace sustained them.
Martyrdom does not mean suffering for its own sake: the heart of it is fidelity to Christ. And while few are called to die for the faith, every Christian is called to bear witness through faithful living, even when it involves sacrifice.
