Bishop Antal Spányi

Bishop Antal Spányi, Bishop of Székesfehérvár, was born on November 13, 1950, in Budapest. He made his philosophical and theological studies at the major seminary of Esztergom, and he was ordained a priest on June 19, 1976, for the Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest. He served as curate at Ludányhalászi from 1976 to 1977, at Szécsény from 1977 to 1983 and at Budapest-Középsőferencváros from 1983 to 1988, and he was parish priest of that last parish from 1988 to 1992 and of Budapest-Erzsébetváros from 1992 to 2003. In 1994 he received the title of papal chaplain, and in 1995 he was appointed vicar general of the archdiocese and a judge of its ecclesiastical tribunal; he also served as its econome. On February 13, 1998, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Esztergom-Budapest and Titular Bishop of Tharros. He received episcopal ordination on March 28, 1998, at Budapest, with László Pacifik Paskai as principal consecrator and Csaba Ternyák and Vilmos Dékány as co-consecrators. On April 4, 2003, he was appointed Bishop of Székesfehérvár, and he was installed on May 24, 2003. From June 2003 he has been director of the Catholic Caritas of Hungary, and from 2004 chief executive of Hungarian Catholic Radio. His episcopal motto is Laudetur Jesus Christus.
