Archbishop of Los Angeles
José Horacio Gomez was born in Monterrey, Mexico, on December 26, 1951. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and a diploma in Public Accountancy from the National University of Monterrey in 1975. He subsequently studied Theology at the University of Navarra in Spain, where he obtained his Doctorate in Theology in 1980. He was ordained a priest of the Opus Dei Prelature on August 15, 1978. From 1978 to 1980, he engaged in pastoral work at an Opus Dei youth center in Spain. From 1980 to 1987, he taught at a school and a high school in Mexico and also served as youth coordinator for the Fatima Deanery in the Diocese of Monterrey (1985–1987). He has been in Texas since 1987, residing primarily in the Diocese of Galveston-Houston. He has carried out pastoral ministry both within the Prelature’s apostolates and by assisting in various parishes. In 1999, he became Vicar of the Texas Delegation of the Opus Dei Prelature. Furthermore, he has been a member of the National Association of Hispanic Priests since 1991, serving twice as its president. Appointed Titular Bishop of Belali and Auxiliary Bishop of Denver (Colorado) on January 23, 2001, he received episcopal ordination on March 26 of that year. From 2001 to 2003, he served as Rector of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Denver, and from 2004 to the present, he has served as Pastor of Mother of God Parish in Denver and as Moderator of the Diocesan Curia.
