Bishop of Janaúba
He was born in Santos Dumont, Minas Gerais, on March 18, 1965. He completed his primary and secondary education in Santos Dumont and finished his philosophy studies at the Santo Antônio Archdiocesan Seminary in Juiz de Fora. He studied theology at the São Paulo Theological Institute (ITESP) in São Paulo and obtained a Licentiate in Spiritual Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome; he also took courses in Pedagogy at the Higher Education Center of Juiz de Fora and in Vocational Guidance at the Viamão Seminary (RS). Dom Roberto José was ordained in 1994, becoming part of the clergy of the Archdiocese of Juiz de Fora. On June 12, 2019, he was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Janaúba by Pope Francis. He was consecrated bishop on August 17, 2019, at 15:00 at the Parish Church of São Miguel e Almas in his hometown. The principal consecrator was Dom Gil Antônio Moreira, Metropolitan Archbishop of Juiz de Fora, and the co-consecrators were Dom Walmor Oliveira de Azevedo, Metropolitan Archbishop of Belo Horizonte, and Dom João Justino de Medeiros Silva, Metropolitan Archbishop of Montes Claros. "They recognized Him in the breaking of the bread" is Dom Roberto's episcopal motto, a passage from the Gospel of Luke.
