The German-language Römisches Messbuch is an official Roman Missal and Lectionary for German-speaking dioceses, approved by the bishops of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Bolzano-Brixen, and Liège and confirmed by the Congregation for Divine Worship. It provides the liturgical calendar, Mass formularies, Eucharistic Prayers, seasonal Prefaces, saintly commemorations, sacramental celebrations, funeral rites, votive Masses, and prayers for the Church, civil society, and particular needs. The revised edition follows the Second Vatican Council’s recovery of ancient sources and pastoral emphasis on Scripture, vernacular participation, and the active roles of the assembly. The Missal orders the liturgical year from Advent and Christmas through Lent, Holy Week, Easter, Ascension, Pentecost, Ordinary Time, and the autumn and winter commemorations. Its rites preserve the Eucharist as Christ’s sacramental sacrifice and present the Mass through the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Detailed rubrics govern the Roman Canon and other Eucharistic Prayers, including the consecration, anamnesis, intercessions, commemorations of saints, feast-day insertions, and the people’s acclamations. Formularies for Confirmation, Holy Orders, Viaticum, marriage, anniversaries, consecrated virginity, religious profession, the sick, dying, refugees, prisoners, families, peace, and civil authorities adapt the Eucharistic celebration to pastoral circumstances. Funeral prayers commend the dead to mercy, purification, rest, resurrection, and Christ’s light. Appendices add Sunday baptismal remembrance, General Intercessions, alternative Preface formulas, and musical settings for participation.
