Dialogue in Truth and Charity (2014)
Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue
Document summary
Dialogue in Truth and Charity offers a pastoral framework for Catholics engaging followers of other religions, developed by the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue after its 2008 Plenary Assembly and on the Council’s fiftieth anniversary. Dialogue joins friendship, respect, listening, and cooperation with a clear Christian identity: it is part of evangelization, not a substitute for proclaiming Christ. The Church affirms God’s universal salvific will, Christ as the unique mediator, the Spirit’s activity beyond visible Church boundaries, and the seeds of truth and grace in other traditions, without treating religions as doctrinally equal.
Bishops, priests, consecrated persons, lay Catholics, theologians, families, schools, universities, healthcare workers, and ecclesial movements each have roles shaped by their vocations. Formation must combine knowledge of Catholic faith, understanding of other religions, maturity, humility, patience, and respect for religious freedom. Four forms are identified: dialogue of life, action, theological exchange, and religious experience. The guide warns against relativism, syncretism, indifferentism, irenicism, poor formation, superficial meetings, ulterior motives, and loss of trust. It calls for cooperation on human dignity, rights, peace, persecution, education, healthcare, and interreligious marriages; respectful proclamation without coercive proselytism; and support for converts. Multi-religious gatherings may involve separate prayer, but not common prayer or hybrid worship, and Catholic sacred spaces retain their character. Local Churches should adapt these principles through sound discernment and context-specific guidelines.
