John Paul II presents the Holy Spirit as the agent of humanity’s purification, sanctification, and entry into the life of the Trinity. Christ’s breathing of the Spirit upon the Apostles inaugurates a new creation and entrusts the Church with the mission of reconciliation. Sanctifying grace, received through faith, hope, and charity, transforms believers into children of God and enables a personal relationship with the Father through Christ. Incorporation into the Church, the Mystical Body of Christ, creates the communion of saints, joining the faithful on earth with the souls in purgatory and the blessed in heaven through an exchange of spiritual gifts. Every Christian is called to holiness and perfection in charity by following God’s Word, the commandments, and the Spirit’s guidance, while religious life bears special witness through chastity, poverty, and obedience. Martyrdom is the supreme witness, but daily fidelity to the commandment of love is required of all.
