The Directory revises Catholic ecumenical norms in light of the 1983 Code of Canon Law, the 1990 Eastern Code, and the 1992 Catechism. Grounded in Vatican II, it describes other Christians as sharing a real though imperfect communion through baptism, while full visible unity requires shared faith, worship, and fraternal harmony without erasing legitimate diversity. Responsibility rests with bishops, Episcopal Conferences, Eastern Catholic synods, the Apostolic See, and the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, supported by diocesan officers, commissions, and systematic formation for clergy, religious, seminarians, teachers, and pastoral workers. Prayer, dialogue, charity, Scripture study, and freedom from prejudice are encouraged in families, parishes, schools, and ecclesial movements. Baptism is recognized when water and the Trinitarian formula are used; common prayer and certain forms of sacramental sharing are regulated, with narrower restrictions for Eucharistic concelebration and defined possibilities with Eastern Churches. Extensive provisions address mixed marriages, including the Catholic party’s responsibilities concerning faith and the children, canonical form, and the prohibition of duplicate ceremonies. Councils of Churches and ecumenical dialogue must preserve Catholic identity and receive clear ecclesial oversight. Cooperation extends to Bible initiatives, theological education, chaplaincy, mission, social justice, environmental care, health ethics, and joint media work, all directed toward evangelization and visible Christian unity.
