Benedict XVI begins from the Christian proclamation that God is love and that faith is a life-changing encounter with Jesus Christ, whose prior love elicits love of God and neighbour. He explores the relationship between eros and agape, arguing that romantic desire is not rejected but must be purified, integrated with the body’s spiritual dignity, and matured into exclusive, lasting self-gift. Biblical faith reveals God as the personal Creator who seeks humanity, while Christ’s Incarnation, Cross, and Eucharist make divine love tangible and draw believers into communion with God and one another. Love of neighbour therefore belongs inseparably to worship and becomes concrete service of anyone in need. The Church’s mission has three linked forms—proclaiming the Word, celebrating the sacraments, and practising charity—and its organised care for the poor belongs to its nature, from the apostolic diaconia to modern cooperation with public agencies. The State must pursue a just social order, while the Church purifies reason and sustains moral commitment; lay Catholics serve the common good in public life. Christian charity requires competence, personal presence, humility, prayer, and freedom from ideology or activism. Faith, hope, and love give strength amid suffering, while the saints and especially Mary show how intimacy with God becomes selfless service.
