John Paul II reflects on Jesus’ mission as the Saviour sent by the Father, recalling that the name “Jesus” means “God saves.” Christ rejects worldly power and reveals his mission through service, culminating in the sacrifice of his life for the sins of all humanity. His washing of the disciples’ feet establishes service to one another as a permanent rule for his followers. Salvation is a free gift of grace, yet each person must receive it through voluntary cooperation. Christ is the sole Saviour and mediator between God and humanity. Other religions may contain elements that prepare for or participate in salvation, but these operate through Christ’s redemptive grace, communicated by the Holy Spirit and the Church. Quoting St Louis de Montfort, the Pope presents Jesus as the absolute centre of Christian life—the true teacher, healer, and source of spiritual life—and calls believers to remain united with him for eternal fulfilment.
