The Shepherd of Hermas

Hermas receives visions and instructions from the angel of repentance, who calls him and his household to turn from sinful desire, deceit, slander, anger, doubt, luxury, and sexual impurity. The visions portray the Church as a building and believers as trees or willow branches whose spiritual condition is disclosed by their fruitfulness. Repentance remains possible, but it requires sincere conversion, perseverance, and sometimes suffering rather than mere regret. The commandments affirm faith in the one Creator, truthfulness, simplicity, almsgiving, patience, prayer without doubt, discernment between the angel of righteousness and the angel of iniquity, and fear of God rather than fear of the devil. Marriage is treated with strict moral seriousness: an adulterous wife who refuses repentance must be separated from, but the husband may not remarry and must receive her again if she repents. The similitudes depict Christians as foreigners whose true city is to come, urging the rich to aid the poor, believers to fast through righteous living, and all who hear the Shepherd’s message to share in repentance and salvation.
