Pope John Paul II
Document summary
John Paul II presents Revelation’s vision of a multitude from every nation and culture united in God’s glory as a basis for interreligious dialogue. God’s saving purpose embraces all humanity, a universality already foreshadowed in the covenants with Noah and Abraham and in the biblical witness to a common call to worship the one Creator. Recalling Saint Irenaeus, the catechesis describes the covenants with Adam, Noah, and Moses as stages leading toward their fullness in Christ.
People of other religions possess elements of hope and truth that point toward divine communion, even without the fullness of Christian revelation. Dialogue therefore calls Christians to work with others for justice, peace, and the common good, while bearing witness to Christ and listening humbly for the Spirit’s action. The Church’s mission to advance God’s kingdom includes relations with Judaism and Islam and the hope that Jews, Christians, and Muslims may share lasting peace.
