Anthony A. Akinwale reflects on death and Christian hope at a Mass for the repose of John Paul II. The Pope’s early losses, wartime experience in Poland, forced labour, clandestine priestly formation, and the 1981 assassination attempt gave him an intimate knowledge of mortality. Against the dissolution of the body, his teaching affirms in every person a “seed of eternity” that rebels against death and looks toward resurrection in Christ. Although no one controls the time or manner of death, the way one lives shapes the way one dies: service of Christ and humanity means dying in union with Christ and entering eternal life. John Paul II’s labour, study, suffering, and perseverance are presented as preparation for leadership and as a witness that those who endure with the Lord will reign with him. Addressing Nigerians, Akinwale recalls the Pope’s concern for justice and development and ends by praying that the faithful servant may receive eternal rest.
