John Paul II honors the workers of Officine Olivetti in Ivrea by presenting Saint Joseph as a model for the dignity of labor. Joseph’s work as a carpenter and his role in raising Jesus within a working family show that manual labor is not beneath human worth. Every honest profession participates in the Creator’s work, serves society, and can express the worker’s spiritual value.
