20 April 2000, Mass of the Lord's Supper
Pope John Paul II
Document summary
The Passover of the Old Covenant provides the setting for understanding Jesus’ final meal: Israel’s deliverance from Egypt, marked by the blood of a lamb, becomes the perpetual memorial of God’s protection and freedom. In the Upper Room, Jesus fulfils and transforms this memorial by instituting the Eucharist, establishing the New Covenant through his body and blood, and commanding the disciples to repeat it in remembrance of him. Every Eucharistic celebration thus proclaims Christ’s redemptive sacrifice as the Lamb of God. The washing of the disciples’ feet shows that Eucharistic communion cannot be separated from humble service. Holy Thursday therefore also recalls the Apostles’ commission to celebrate the Eucharist and serve the Church, calling believers to embody Christ’s love while awaiting his return.
