Pope Benedict XVI commemorates the second anniversary of John Paul II’s death by giving thanks for his long service as shepherd and witness to God’s love. The Gospel scene at Bethany, where Mary anoints Jesus’ feet before his Passion, provides the central image: her selfless act of devotion illuminates the late Pope’s similarly unstinting dedication to Christ. John Paul II’s sacrificial life continues to mark the Church with its spiritual “fragrance,” a living legacy of love and fidelity.
