Celebrating the Eucharist with the Catholic community of Tromsø, John Paul II reads the fjords and mountains of Northern Norway as signs of the Creator’s greatness. He greets the region’s diverse population, Lutherans, other Christians, and all people of good will, presenting his visit as an appeal for mutual respect and Christian unity. Human beings are created in God’s image and likeness, crowned with glory and entrusted with the earth. This dignity calls them to self-giving communion, especially in marriage and family life, and to responsible care rather than exploitation of creation. Through Baptism they become children of God, freed from original sin and directed toward the Kingdom; Christ’s Cross reveals the depth of divine love and the path to salvation. Christian charity therefore embraces every person, including enemies, because love of neighbour depends on relationship with God. The Gospel, fulfilled in Christ’s Cross and Resurrection, calls believers to live as children of light. The Pope thanks Tromsø and prays for blessing and unity.
