E Supremi

Pius X accepts the papacy with reluctance, conscious of his unworthiness and of the daunting task of succeeding a predecessor who governed the Church for nearly twenty-six years. He diagnoses contemporary society as suffering from a deep-rooted apostasy: humanity rejects God, persecutes faith, and attempts to take the Creator’s place. His sole programme is to “restore all things in Christ,” not to advance a political agenda. Since Christ alone reconciles humanity to the true, living, triune God, the Church must recover its discipline and uphold Christian teaching on marriage, education, property, and social duties. Priests are central to this restoration and must first be formed into living images of Christ through holiness, prayer, study, and pastoral charity. Pius X charges bishops to govern seminaries carefully, select worthy candidates, and guide clergy away from intellectual errors and worldly distractions. Religious instruction combats the ignorance that causes disbelief, while charity rather than harsh zeal should guide evangelization. All the faithful, working under episcopal direction, must witness through virtuous lives and concrete works. The letter ends by mandating public Rosary recitation during the month and invoking Mary, Saint Joseph, and Saints Peter and Paul.
