Caritas in Veritate
Pope Benedict XVI
Document summary
Pope Benedict XVI presents charity in truth as the foundation of authentic human development and Catholic social teaching. Charity requires truth, accessible through faith and reason; justice is its minimum measure, while mercy, forgiveness, and gratuitousness carry social life beyond strict rights. Recalling Paul VI’s Populorum Progressio, he defines development as a vocation involving every person and the whole person, including openness to God. Globalization’s gains are set against inequality, weakened labour protections, hunger, corruption, and cultural relativism; food and water, human life, family responsibility, religious freedom, and the person’s transcendent dignity are essential to development.
Economic life must move beyond the opposition between market and state: businesses, civil society, and public institutions should serve workers, communities, and creation through fraternity and solidarity. The same principles shape environmental stewardship, migration, decent work, unions, finance, microfinance, fair trade, education, and reform of global institutions, potentially including a legally regulated world political authority governed by subsidiarity. Religion should engage public life through dialogue with reason, while technology, scientific research, media, and bioethics require moral judgment rather than claims of self-sufficiency. Authentic freedom follows natural law, and Christian humanism receives development as God’s gift through prayer, justice, forgiveness, and service to the human family.
