John, son of Zebedee, is presented as a fisherman called by Jesus into the circle of his closest disciples. He witnesses the Transfiguration, the raising of Jairus’s daughter, and Christ’s prayer in Gethsemane. When John’s mother asks that he and his brother receive places of honour in the Kingdom, Jesus redirects their ambition toward the meaning of discipleship: following him entails sacrificial service and a willingness to share in his suffering.
