To Pilgrims who have come to Rome for the Canonisations on Sunday (20 October 2025)
Pope Leo XIV
Document summary
Meeting pilgrims the day after the canonization of seven new saints, Pope Leo XIV presents them as shining signs of hope and as evidence that the Church's communion embraces all the faithful across space, time, language and culture. He honours the martyred Armenian Bishop Ignatius Maloyan, who chose his Lord over freedom, and recalls the Armenian custom of carving crosses into stone. Saint Peter To Rot of Papua New Guinea, an ordinary catechist, carried out his apostolate in secret under the occupying forces of the Second World War and defended the sanctity of marriage when those authorities permitted polygamy. The Pope quotes his words: "God our Father is with us and looking after us."
Recalling the Venezuelan bishops' letter of 7 October, he reflects on the faith, hope and charity of Saint José Gregorio Hernández and Saint Carmen Rendiles, people much like ourselves whose example calls Venezuelans to see one another as brothers and sisters. He praises Sister Maria Troncatti's medical mission among the indigenous peoples of Ecuador, and Sister Vincenza Maria Poloni, founder of the Sisters of Mercy, for her service to the sick and marginalized. Bartolo Longo's conversion and works of mercy lead him to recommend the Rosary to everyone, before he imparts his apostolic blessing.
