Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone presents Catholic education as formation of the whole person for happiness with God, not merely preparation for worldly or professional success. Against relativism and the loss of objective truth, he proposes three pillars: the cooperation of faith and reason, the cultivation of virtue, and the sacramental principle. Faith and reason must inform one another without confusing their distinct methods; this rejects both the denial of human rational capacity and the claim that reason can flourish without grace. Virtue directs human habits toward union with God, with humility serving as a foundation because it acknowledges both human limitations and the dignity of being made in God’s image. Chastity is described not as mere abstinence but as the integration of sexuality into self-giving love that respects each person’s intrinsic dignity. The sacramental principle recovers the capacity of physical signs and symbols to disclose spiritual realities, above all in the Incarnation. Catholic institutions are consequently called to restore truth, beauty, and order and to help rebuild a culture marked by relativism and a “flight from God.”
