Ordo Exsequiarum (The Order of Christian Funerals)

The revised Order of Christian Funerals, promulgated by the Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship with Paul VI’s approval in 1969, presents Christian death through Christ’s Paschal mystery. Its rites unite prayer for the dead with consolation and hope for the living, and require Scripture throughout. Episcopal Conferences may adapt translations and ritual details to local circumstances, subject to confirmation by the Apostolic See. The order distinguishes the final commendation and farewell from purification: it is the community’s leave-taking of a member of Christ’s Body. It also addresses cremation, pastoral responsibilities, family participation, lay leadership, and the equal dignity of mourners. Adult funerals may proceed through stations at the home, church, and cemetery; through a cemetery chapel and grave; or from the home alone. The book supplies vigils, processions, funeral Masses or Liturgies of the Word, commendations, burial formularies, readings, psalms, and prayers. Separate provisions serve children, including baptized children, infants, and children who died before Baptism. Prayers remember particular circumstances such as sudden death, prolonged illness, service of the Gospel, and the death of parents; the Prayer of the Faithful intercedes for the dead, mourners, the Church, peace, and salvation. Grave blessings and prayers for unbaptized children commend them to divine mercy while preserving the theological significance of Baptism.
