Pius IX teaches that God chose Mary from eternity to be the Mother of the incarnate Son and prepared her with a unique holiness. Because of this vocation, Mary was preserved entirely from the stain of original sin and remained free from all sin. The Church’s liturgy, public devotion, and continuous teaching bear witness to this doctrine concerning her conception.
